Why Alberto Alemanno recommends Ursula Hirschmann
“Because she co-authored the Ventotene Manifesto’s vision of European federalism while herself stateless, and because she demonstrated that building transnational democracy requires both intellectual courage and practical organizing across borders.”
German-Italian antifascist activist (1913-1991), born in Berlin, exiled to Paris and Italy after Hitler's rise. In 1941, confined with her partner Eugenio Colorni and Altiero Spinelli on the island of Ventotene, she helped circulate and edit the Manifesto for a Free and United Europe, a founding text of European federalism. In 1975 she founded Femmes pour l'Europe / Frauen für Europa, the first transnational network placing women's rights at the heart of European integration.
